Ok, we all have had played with two types of ventrilo players that are beyond annoying at times. The first is the air horn player who whenever they speak blasts your ear drums out because their outbound is turned up way too high. The second is the mouse who can hardly be heard, which causes us to turn up the volume and get even harder by the air horns. Some folks who play wow that understand compression found a good fix for this using a compression effect to normalize people's voices.

* Go to Setup
* Enable Direct Sound
* Select the SFX Button
* Select Compressor and click Add.
* Under Compressor Properties use the following settings:
Gain = Adjust for how loud you want people to be. (I use 15)
Attack = 0.01
Release = Around 500
Threshold = Around -30
Ratio = 100
Pre delay = 4.0
* Done!

For details see this thread in the wow forum:

Gain is your overall volume control here so play with that to get your ideal volume for people.

My WOW guild sucks with Vent. Two people are nearly silent cause they did not turn on mic boost and then we have two people extremely loud. Did not raid last night so not sure how well this works, but I do use compression in my music so makes total sense.

Yeah, I've been using this a good long while, it's definitely a 'must' for Vent. Keep in mind, though, if you use multiple user names you gotta set it up each time. =/
